Bonanza for arms industry
On 2nd January, Clinton announced he would increase the US $260 billion a year military budget by an additional $110 billion over the next six years.
On 6th January, Clinton announced that the US would finally build the long-delayed Star Wars missile defence system, on which $55 billion has already been spent. Even Reagan and Bush backed away from this commitment, which would represent a violation of the START II agreement, still being considered by the Russian duma.
