Loony Left football tournament

John Stewart, midfield magician, reports.

Forget all the hype about that other football competition going on in France -- the only tournament any serious socialists should have been following recently took place on Clapham Common in June. The periodic Between The Lines Loony Left Cup was the biggest and best so far.

Sixteen teams entered the 7-a-side tournament but, as always with the left, some turned up late and others didn't show at all. Dynamo Semtex sent their apologies and Reclaim the Streets, who entered a North London and South London team, only managed enough players for one team between them. The others had presumably gone off to occupy a road-building project!

The re-worked league soon sorted out the proletarian revolutionaries from the student intellectuals as the all-conquering BTL advanced, inflicting historic defeats (well 1-0, 2-1 and 1-0) on Sons of Emil, Class War and Nations Vibration. A world historic defeat was suffered in the semi-finals as BTL were beaten 2-1 by aspiring Bonapartists Stockwell Diablos. Despite heroics performed by BTL editor Ray Whittaker, BTL were unable to defend the trophy they won last year. In a local derby Spartak Stockwell beat the Diablos in a closely fought final.

Despite being moved from our pitch half-way through the tournament by some extremely big Australian rules footballers the Loony Left Cup was again a success.
