The Geoff Martin column

UNISON's London Region convenor takes a lefty look at life.

You will probably have noticed that, in the teeth of relentless campaigning by this column, the Government has decided to refer the Murdoch bid for Man Utd to the Monopo-lies and Mergers Commission.

In case anyone thinks I might be going a bit soft, my views about Man Utd as a club still hold. It's well known that Man Utd fans from Manchester are about as rare as socialists on an NEC approved list of Labour Party candidates.

My crusade against the Murdoch takeover is purely on behalf of the wider interests of football. I'd even do the same thing for Arsenal. I hope this clears things up.

While we're on the subject of News Intemational I like the gag about how if Tony Blair ever went missing the search party wouldn't need to look much further than Rupert Murdoch's colon.

I see that Mr Tony is planning to "trawl the business community" for what he considers to be a suitable candidate for London Mayor. So who will be expected to bankroll the campaign of such a figure running under the Labour banner?

The trade unions of course. And will we do it? Not if I have my way. I'm sick and tired of UNISON members' money being used to promote the careers of New Labour politicians who couldn't give a toss about issues like low pay and privatisation.

Before my friends in the SLP get too excited this is not a call for disaffiliation. All I'm saying is that we should be a bit more careful where we invest our political funds. The days when the unions operated a one-way cash point for money-grabbing New Labour careerists must end. It's time we changed the PIN number.

Disloyal Mr Tony joke Number Two:

A dumped Labour Candidate accuses Blair of being a dictator. Blair says: "Hey, listen, not so much of the tator, OK?"

Everyone I know thought it was a hoot when Thatch was dragged out of the attic to say what a great guy that bastard Pinochet is. But we need to remind ourselves that there is at least one person who still takes Thatcher seriously -- our glorious leader, Mr Tony.

How scary is that? Vaguely sticking to the subject of scary I see that the one time Ginger Spice (ret) has been appointed as a UN ambassador and general all-round role model for teenage girls.

Presumably this is all based on her track record of pinching Prince Charles' arse, offering Nelson Mandela a grope and flashing off her drawers at every opportunity. Is this all a bit weird or am I just getting old?
