Support Party members' right to decide their candidates

With the suspicion that the Party leadership is trying to keep London Party members from adopting Ken Livingstone MP as Labour's candidate for Mayor of London, LLB urges its readers to move the following motion supporting the policy agreed by GLLP conference.

"We note the meeting of the Greater London Labour Party Regional Board on 10th November which agreed a system of self-nomination by potential candidates for Mayor and assembly, that a selection board is established to consider candidates and that this decision has been passed as a recommendation to the National Executive Committee.

We note that the system recommended by the Board removes any right of CLPs to nominate their candidate of choice, and contradicts the decision of the Greater London Labour Party regional conference on 13th June which agreed that any member of the Greater London Labour Party could seek nomination and that all candidates who are nominated by a minimum of 12.5 per cent of London CLPs (that is ten CLPs) will automatically be shortlisted so that their names will appear on the ballot papers to select Labour's candidate.

We resolve therefore to write to the NEC asking them to support and implement decisions of the Greater London Labour Party conference on the method of selecting Labour's candidate for London Mayor."
