Although this was the first Scottish case, there have been a number of cases in England and others in Europe, a couple of which were taken to the European courts. In every case the man lost.
Lynne Kelly's ex-partner is a violent man who was convicted of assaulting her last year - something about which he lied in court, but the press exposed him. He openly declared that he had no intention of supporting the resulting child - and, indeed, he has another child, now aged three, whom he does not support.
Neither the church, despite the propaganda it had put out about abortion before the election, nor any anti-abortion organisation appear to have supported him and he dropped the case when he ran out of money. Although a Scottish tabloid paid him for his story, most of the press supported Lynne - reflecting public opinion. She had her abortion, saying afterwards: "I've no regrets."
Meanwhile, the much-hyped offer by Cardinal Thomas Winning to give money to pregnant women not to abort has been quietly forgotten. No woman is known to have come forward - although people did make donations!
Overall recent events have strengthened the pro-choice forces in Scotland and emphasised that public opinion is on their side.
