ONLY a week after the manifesto ballot, with the media declaring the Labour left dead and buried, one hundred and fifty Party activists turned out for the Socialist Campaign Group Supporters' Network AGM in London on 9th November. Among them were delegations from local Campaign Groups in London, Manchester, Southampton and Leeds.

After SCG Chair John Austin Walker MP opened the meeting, London UNISON convenor Geoff Martin warned of an early confrontation between an incoming Labour Government and public sector unions. Ken Livingstone described the 'Millbank Tendency' as the real 'party within a party' with a secret agenda. The best attended workshop was on EMU. A lively debate was kicked off by Livingstone and Alan Simpson MP. Despite differences in emphasis, there was unity on the need to fight current proposals for a single currency from an uncompromisingly internationalist perspective.

Another well-attended workshop was held on Party democracy, reflecting the anger and anxiety over threats to destroy the role of CLPs and Conference.

The final session voted to change the name of the Network to 'The Network of Socialist Campaign Groups' and elected Will McMahon (Secretary), Simon Letts (Treasurer), Kate Ahrens (Newsletter Editor), Anne Kane (Women's Officer) and myself as Chair.
